I have so many friends & family who love this place, that I feel bad if I'm in the vicinity & don't go. I've really, really tried to find SOME redeeming quality, but I can't. I usually only eat beef hot dogs, but I took one for the team & tried one last visit...my best guess is that they are made from monkey meat, as I cannot begin to put a finger on what exactly they are made of. The overly greasy fries were as soggy as the hot dog bun. Even the birch beer tasted "off"....& I LOVE an icy cold birch beer every now & then. Every table in the covered carport/seating area was as sticky as a movie theatre floor, which attracted yellow bees from all over the tri-state-area. I really had to use the ladies room, but I opted for a nasty gas station, in the name of cleanliness.
Horrible...3 items on the menu, hot dogs were gross and tasted like store-brand expired bologna and you have a choice of three toppings - onions, pickles or relish. The fries were soaked in salt and the place was dirty. I cannot fathom how this place is so popular and has been around for so long...Absolutely terrible.
It didn't take long to remember some of the many beefs I had with them with the first being the parking lot which was a lot more crowded than what the restaurant seemed to be. This was of course not the fault of management but rather people who feel the need to park there and wander around the area to enjoy the creek. The next item was the rest room which also reminded me of my previous trip where I arrived and before putting in my order I asked where the restrooms were and was told that they were for customers only, duh most normal people like to wash their hands before eating which I explained to the older woman who made the comment. I made sure I went to her window after doing my business so she could tell I was being truthful. The restroom also had those annoying faucets that you push down while getting only one hand wet at a time which makes cleaning them quite difficult.
This a great place to sit and relax great outdoor seating also when the weather is great also another bonus a real nice tour stream that flows right behind it so have your fishing pole ready...only sells hot dogs and a few different snacks but all good and a great staff to boot
Look....I love a good hot dog. First thing I do in NYC is get a "filthy water dog" & enjoy every bite....but as much as I try, I can find NOTHING nice to say about Hot Dog Johnny's. Sorry....I really did try last time....
Four or five years ago I was in the area for a work related trip and saw an interesting looking spot I thought might at least be worth investigating to see if it might be a go to place to stop in if I was in the area again sometime. Unfortunately I was not writing Google reviews yet so I could not go back and see how that trip was but I did remember that Hot Dog Johnny`s was way down the list of places to go back to. When back in the area and on my way home I felt a little hungry and figured I may as well check them out so I would know why I hadn't been back as well as remind me in case I wanted to come years from now.
I was in the area again this week and tried another local spot that was a lot better so I doubt I will ever come back but that's just me, you might like it here but you have been warned.
It's hot dogs, so if you're expecting 5 star dining, you're in the wrong place. Great history, great location, swing set out front for kids, indoor and outdoor seating, although both limited. If you truly enjoy hotdogs, casual, kid friendly, family fun, great place to go. I make sure to stop every time I get back to Jersey!
The rest I will mention from this visit, there is no posted menu or any idea how much the hot dogs cost, they only have the nasty yellow mustard, no mention at all of what their hot dogs are made of and after the lady being a bit rude when I asked a question I didn't dare ask her anything else. Not needing a drink I ordered just a hot dog and fries and was okay with the price as it was about what I had expected. The fries were good but I don't think I cared for the hot dog too much since I did not recognize the flavor as to what type of meat (I assume it was meat) they used to make them. At home I only use beef hot dogs and these did not taste of beef at all.
